A Fresh Start for Family: The Adoption Journey for Zahara and Her Brother
April 16, 2025
Spring is the season of renewal. The world bursts into bloom, reminding us that growth and transformation are always possible. For seven-year-old Zahara and her brother Azriel, this season brings a change they never thought possible: a loving, permanent home—together.
Zahara is a bright, enthusiastic first grader who’s always smiling despite facing many early childhood years filled with trauma and uncertainty. At such a young age, she had witnessed her mother being unconscious under the effects of drugs. Her parents’ substance abuse disorder made it unsafe for Zahara and her brother to stay at home.
The Department of Children and Families (DCF) had to remove the children from home due to parental substance use, medical neglect, and educational neglect.
Luckily, a Plummer Youth Promise foster family welcomed Zahara last April, offering her a safe and stable place to heal. This was pivotal in Zahara’s journey as children who enter the foster care system experience trauma over the loss of their family and home environment. They often feel abandoned, confused, and alone in the world.
Zahara was quiet and withdrawn when first meeting her foster family. She was recommended to undergo therapy services and had health concerns after being examined by a physician. Her foster family understood both the emotional and physical toll that Zahara was enduring. They helped Zahara get the medication she needed to become clear of her illness . However, the emotional trauma remained, and the foster family remained patient as Zahara processed the loss of her family and the uncertainty of what her future would hold.
Love and stability of her foster home helped Zahara flourish. The foster family had a little girl around the same age. As time went on, Zahara formed a deep bond with her foster sister as they played together and became close friends. Zahara slowly adjusted to her new foster family and began to trust people once again.
Even though she became more comfortable with her new family, she felt in her heart that something was still missing. She longed to stay connected to her biological brother Azriel.
Maintaining family connections is important to support a child’s healing process. We understand the importance of encouraging a youth’s relationship with their biological relatives for permanency. Zahara’s foster parents ensured she and her brother spent time together.
We believe that youth should play an important role in determining their living arrangement goals. Empowering the youth in decision-making helps develop trust and provides them with control over their own future. Zahara’s foster parents worked with a Plummer Youth Promise case worker and DCF to coordinate biweekly visits with Zahara’s family.
Zahara’s dream was to be reunited permanently with her biological family. But as the family meetings continued, it became clear that the parents still weren’t ready to give Zahara the care she needed. Although the relationship with her parents remained strained, one thing was very clear: Zahara and her brother’s bond remained stronger than ever.
Thanks to the help of our team and Zahara’s foster parents, she was able to spend quality time together with her brother. The two siblings shared meals, had sleepovers, and strengthened their bond as they worked to overcome shared family trauma.
Reunification with their biological parents was the original goal, but it wasn’t possible. In the end, something beautiful happened. A loving, adoptive family was found for both siblings—together.
With her new family, Zahara has found a regained sense of belonging and confidence. She has even learned to speak Spanish fluently with her adoptive family! Most importantly, she continues to grow and overcome her challenges with her brother by her side.
